NCR Appoints Goodson Master Distributor for new POS Solution

First Scalable, Wholly-Integrated Software Package for Small/Medium Retailers

Sydney, 26 February 2004 - NCR Australia’s Retail Solutions Division (RSD) has appointed Goodson Imports Pty Ltd as Master Distributor for its newly-augmented PC-based Neighbourhood POS™ (point-of-sale) solution into the small and medium retail market space.

Goodson is an Australian company founded in 1950 – the parent company is Goodson Calculators Pty Ltd – with offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide.

The Asia Pacific Marketing Director for NCR’s Retail Solutions Division, Conway Kosi, said: “The target market in the Australian non-food (general retailing) industry numbers around 21,000-plus outlets and the hospitality industry accounts for a further 36,000 outlets, with combined annual turnover worth in excess of $A35 billion annually.

“For several years NCR, like most global players in the retail market, had focussed on providing integrated products and solutions to the big end of town – large food and general merchandise retail chains. Yet NCR had started out more than a century ago by taking a leadership role globally in developing technology for the grass-roots retailer; the butcher, the baker, the corner-store owner.”

Mr Kosi said that 18 months ago NCR had looked at the small and medium retail businesses worldwide and saw that it was still a largely untapped sector.

“At the moment, while there are a range of software platforms in use, there is a lack of any fully-integrated end-to-end software solution that scales across various verticals. In addition no single vendor is providing a PC-based POS hardware and software solution to distributors and resellers,” he said.

For years, retailers in the small to medium space have been offered hardware and software sourced from a range of manufacturers and developers, which means that there is no single point of contact in terms of providing support for both hardware and software.

“Given the size and scope in the target markets it made sense for us to appoint a Master Distributor for Neighbourhood POS,” Mr Kosi said. “Goodson is a company that has evolved with the Australian retail industry for more than half a century and its national presence, coupled with a reseller base of more than 400, makes the company ideal for us to work with to take Neighbourhood POS to market.

“Neighbourhood POS is a single-vendor end-to-end solution that allows resellers to streamline their networks and grow their business, using a solution that scales and cuts across multiple retail environments using the same version of software application - all you need do is simply change parameters. This is a huge plus for the reseller and the customer, as it makes supporting the application easier and more cost-effective,” he explained.

The solution is designed specifically as a platform that will meet the needs of Hospitality and General retailing – small niche food and retail outlets, versus multiple platforms.

Compatible with a range of NCR open architecture RealPOS terminals and with a high level of retail integration in a very small footprint it offers:

Reliability of an embedded solution Flexibility and power of an Open System Easily supported total hardware and software integrated solutions Reliable and highly-functional store solution that easily supported lean IT resources at the right price.

Goodson’s General Manager, Max Schuddeboom, said the partnership could only be a “win win" situation for both organisations, given our track record in the Australian market and NCR’s history of developing high quality solutions for the retail market globally”.

“We have a very good foundation of more than 400 resellers we can offer this solution to as well as look for opportunities to grow business as these sectors continue to expand.”
