IBM, Citrix Offer Philippines ISVs an ASP Boost

IBM Philippines and Citrix Systems, provider of application server software and services worldwide, have teamed up to enable local software developers to offer their existing applications over the Web.
The partnership is part of IBM's Application Service Provider (ASP) Prime Initiative, which aims to provide education, application evaluation, technical support and consulting services to independent software vendors (ISVs) that want to become ASPs.
"Citrix will power up IBM's ASP data center here to help jump-start the ASP market," said Phil Osborne, business development manager of iBusiness at Citrix Systems Asia-Pacific. "We will provide developers and businesses alike the tools to make them ready for server-based ASP hosting."
Ramon Y. Dimacali, chairman and chief executive officer of IBM Philippines, also announced that IBM has been made an authorized reseller of Citrix products in the country.
"As a Citrix Solutions Network member, IBM Philippines will provide consultation, installation, integration and support for the Citrix application server product line. So the alliance goes beyond hardware and software offerings," Dimacali said.
Meanwhile, IBM will include Citrix MetaFrame application server software and NFuse application portal technology as key offerings in its data center. Citrix NFuse allows applications running on a Citrix MetaFrame server to be published onto a Web page and accessed through a standard browser.
"In today's Internet-driven economy, the success of a business is tied to the speed at which one can launch new products and services against an existing IT infrastructure," said Dimacali, expressing confidence that ASPs will have a huge local market base as well as global reach.
Dimacali said chances are very high for local ASPs to win lucrative U.S. contracts for ASP services here, since electronic transmission is inexpensive and the people here are highly skilled in IT.
"At IBM, we have the setup and the facility already, so we are encouraging local dot-coms to make their applications ASP-ready and offer them now to reach more customers on the Net," Dimacali said.
IBM is also set to announce this month its Service Provider Ready Program, a comprehensive five-step process to transform ISVs into ASPs, and Citrix's iBusiness program aimed at helping ASPs and ISPs leverage the application-hosting model.
