Lucent Technologies has opened its first Asia Pacific Training and Education Centre (APTEC) and Customer Technical Support (CTS) Centre in Singapore.
The centres will bring training, service and support to its customers and business partners throughout the region.
"The opening reconfirms our commitment to our customers and partners in the Asia-Pacific region," said Mike Butcher, Lucent's Asia-Pacific president and chief executive officer. Butcher said they have invested a total of $US18 million for the centres.
"These centres demonstrate the value of Lucent's multi-local approach to global operations.
"They show, we believe, that our strength lies in our ability to become an integral part of the local environments where we do business," Butcher said.
Both centres will be staffed by teams of Lucent experts as well as local staff who will have direct access to Lucent training centres and Bell Labs facilities around the world, Butcher said.
The 1858-square-metre APTEC is Lucent's first central training facility for its Asia-Pacific service providers and business partners.
The company will use it to conduct more than 40 market-specific courses on wireless technologies, switching, access and structured cabling.
On the other hand, the 1486.4-square-metre Customer Technical Support Centre will initially give customers and partners access to Lucent experts, enhanced software and hardware tools, as well as access to all the resources and knowledge of Bell Labs.
Butcher said the lab will ultimately support most Lucent-deployed products and services in the region.
The centre will also connect to most installations in the region, and will provide capabilities for new product testing, advanced problem resolution, and software upgrade testing.
The training and technical support centres are both located in Chai Chee Industrial Park. Together, the centres have 10 classrooms and about 650 square metres of laboratory area that is equipped with Lucent's flagship products, including 5ESS, AnyMedia, wireless applications and Systimax structured cabling solutions.
Butcher said the company tailors courses especially to meet the needs of Lucent customers and business partners. Certified trainers from Lucent's training centres worldwide teach the courses.
