EDS adds BPO services

Electronic Data Systems Australia (EDS) has revealed it plans to join the throng of service providers introducing business process outsourcing (BPO) services locally.

Initially, EDS's BPO offerings in Australia are likely to be focused around back-end processing, such as cheque and card processing, for banks and insurance companies, said Craig Dower, marketing director, EDS.

The company will also investigate local market opportunities for other BPO offerings, including human resources services and financial services.

The introduction of BPO services locally will leverage EDS's relationship with the Commonwealth Bank, Dower said. He added that EDS will also draw on its association with management consultancy AT Kearney to add value to its BPO offerings.

EDS will focus on selling BPO into its existing customer base, as well as to new prospects, Dower said.

The company already offers BPO to Compaq in Australia as part of a global deal worth $US500 million over eight years.

Originally signed with Digital in 1997, before Compaq bought the company, the deal gives EDS responsibility for handling customer administration for Compaq's customer services business unit.

EDS is currently establishing a global solution, in conjunction with AT Kearney, for Compaq to provide its customers with quoting services, contract administration, the registration of service obligations and the creation of invoices.

Fifty Compaq customer administration employees have moved to EDS in Australia as part of the agreement.

EDS has also won BPO deals with the British Broadcasting Corporation, the Bank of Scotland and First National Bank in South Africa. Some 10 per cent of EDS worldwide revenues in 1997 came from BPO, Dower said.
