IBM helps Binghamton University launch Linux lab

With support from IBM, Binghamton University in New York is launching a Linux Technology Center where students and faculty are expected to do cutting-edge research on Linux-based systems and open source computing.

The center will not only tap into the expertise of students and faculty from the Thomas J. Watson School of Engineering and Applied Science and the School of Management, it will be plugged into key industry leaders in the region. The goal is to provide basic and applied research that can also help create jobs and boost economic growth in Greater Binghamton.

IBM is providing hardware, software, personnel and other services for the center, which will be located on the Binghamton campus. This will be one of the few academic research programs in the country dedicated to Linux.
