Minister to leave politics

The Federal Minister responsible for implementing the government's controversial IT outsourcing initiative has announced his decision to bow out of politics.

Minister for Finance and Administration John Fahey said he will retire from politics at the next election after doctors advised him to change his lifestyle to recover from lung cancer. Fahey will remain as finance minister until the election later this year and is leaving after a 17-year political career. The 56-year-old returned to work earlier this month 12 kilograms lighter after four months off work following surgery to remove a lung.
