Dell has taken the number one spot in market share for sales to both business and government in Australia according to IDC's latest analysis for Q4 2000.
IDC senior analyst Logan Ringland pointed to Dell's direct business model as a leading factor in the market share results claiming the company is well ahead of the number two player.
"Dell has also taken the coveted number one ranking for sales to the government sector from Ipex holding 16.4 per cent of market share; Dell is well ahead of Compaq in the private sector," he said.
The company's MD in Australia Gary Elliott said unit shipments in the fourth quarter were up 43 per cent.
"Unlike our competitors who produce finished goods for inventory, we keep only five days of component parts in our factories around the world," Elliott said.
"With the continuing decline in component costs, we've been able to reduce system prices on the desktops, notebooks and servers we sell to business and the public sector, despite the falling value of the Australian dollar."
