Draft mobile number portability framework released for comment

The Australian Communications Industry Forum (ACIF) is hoping to be in a position to propose a suitable timeframe for the implementation of mobile number portability (MNP) by January, officials claim.

After just two months of development, ACIF yesterday released the draft Framework for the Introduction of Mobile Number Portability for public comment.

The document contains principles and an overall direction for the introduction of MNP, including a suitable model and architecture`.

Johanne Plante, CEO of ACIF said the ACIF Mobile Number Portability Project Management Group decided a hybrid model or architecture would be best introduced.

The hybrid model is most widely supported by carriers, mobile and fixed," Plante said.

According to the draft framework, the hybrid model is designed to enable each prime service deliverer (PSD) to choose the method of call routing most economic for that PSD.

According to Plante, OneTel was the only provider to object to the hybrid model.

Plante said the Australian Communications Authority (ACA) and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) will determine the final MNP model.
