Credentials: Web Certifications

SAN MATEO (05/08/2000) - With Web technology moving at Internet speed, hands-on experience is the best bet for IT pros establishing Internet credentials. Yet Web-focused certifications can also be valuable.

The basics

Who offers it:

Microsoft Corp. offers two Internet-specific certifications, and Novell offers tracks as part of its Certified Internet Professional certification. A number of independent companies offer vendor-neutral certification.

Sample programs:

MCSE+Internet - A fairly new Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) extension. Candidates must pass seven OS exams and two elective exams.

MCP+Site Building - The Microsoft Certified Professional+Site Building credential is designed for Web developers who manage sophisticated Web sites.

Candidates are required to pass two exams.

Novell Inc. CIP - Five tracks are available: Internet Business Strategist, Web Designer, Web Developer, Intranet Manager, and Internet Architect. Candidates take one-or two-day courses and must pass two to six exams.

Vendor-neutral certifications - Training and certification specialist HyCurve offers four Internet-related certifications; Learning Tree International offers five Internet certification programs; and Internet solutions company ProsoftTraining.com offers a Certified Internet Webmaster program.
