BT Cellnet, QXL.com Partner on Auctions over WAP

LONDON (04/18/2000) - BT Cellnet Ltd., a unit of British Telecommunications PLC, and U.K. online auction house QXL.com PLC have signed a partnership agreement to bring online auctions to mobile Internet phones using BT's Genie Internet wireless platform, the companies announced today.

The co-branded auction Web site will allow users to bid on items over BT Cellnet's WAP (wireless applications protocol) phones, BT and QXL.com said in a statement.

BT Cellnet officially launched its prepaid WAP Internet phone service in the U.K. on April 3. [See "BT Launches Global Mobile Portal, UMTS Network," March 9.]A spokesperson for QXL.com said the auction via WAP service would be available to the mass market around the beginning of May.
