NTT DoCoMo Takes US$4.5B Stake in KPN Mobile

PARIS (05/09/2000) - Japanese mobile telecommunications operator NTT DoCoMo Inc. has struck a deal with Koninklijke KPN NV to buy 15 percent of the voting rights to the Dutch operator's mobile telecommunications subsidiary KPN Mobile NV for 5 billion euros (US$4.5 billion).

If the memorandum of understanding signed today leads to a definitive agreement, NTT DoCoMo will have the right to nominate at least one representative to KPN Mobil's supervisory board, the Japanese company said today in a statement.

NTT DoCoMo intends to use its stake in KPN Mobile as a way into the European mobile market, according to the statement. The company said it expects to provide the Dutch company with technical support to assist in the introduction of the third-generation mobile systems, and mobile multimedia services.
