Nortel IP Software in IBM Network Processor

BOSTON (05/10/2000) - Looking to extend the Internet to a variety of devices, Nortel Networks Corp. announced at the Networld+Interop conference here that its Open IP Environment routing software will be embedded in IBM Corp.'s Power Network Processor Nortel plans to develop products that use IBM's Power Network Processor, officials said. The software programmability in IBM's processor gives equipment manufacturers control over features such as packet classification, packet forwarding, and real-time frame processing, Nortel officials said.

Nortel's Open IP Environment, which makes the company's IP routing software available to manufacturers, developers, and system manufacturers, was launched in November of last year. The initiative was aimed at speeding the development of Internet applications and services by allowing developers to choose features based on variables such as device size and type, environment, and user needs.

Nortel officials said the company hopes its Open IP approach will help Internet-enable a wide variety of devices, including servers, network processors, set-top boxes, and PDAs (personal digital assistants). Nortel officials said that opening up core routing capabilities to a wider field of developers and manufactures can promote greater interoperability among network vendors and equipment.

The company has established more than 200 licensing agreements for its Open IP environment, putting its routing software operating systems, semiconductors, and network processors.

Version 2.0 of Open IP Environment, featuring enhanced QoS (quality of service) and security capabilities, will be releases within the next several weeks, according to Nortel officials.
