LONDON (05/10/2000) - The U.K.-based business-to-business (B2B) utilities portal Web site proposed by SAP U.K., a subsidiary of SAP AG, Achilles Information Ltd. and Requisite Technology Inc. has received backing from six organizations in the utilities industry, the companies announced today.
Initially announced last February, the B2B marketplace, called the Achilles Marketplace, is set to bring U.K. utility companies together with suppliers to exchange information over the Internet and buy and sell products. [See "SAP U.K., Others to Launch Portal for Utilities," Feb. 24.]The U.K. organizations that have committed to the utilities portal are the U.K. government environmental protection department, the Environment Agency; the independent electricity generator and supplier PowerGen PLC; GPU Power Distribution; South West Water Ltd.; the water services company Anglian Water PLC and Yorkshire Water PLC, the companies said in a statement.
The portal is already in the trial stage and should launch officially by the end of June, the companies said.
The technology infrastructure for the portal will be based on the mySAP.com Market product. Furthermore, the marketplace will use Achilles' Utilities Vendor Database (UVDB), and the U.S.-based Requisite will build and maintain the portal catalog using its BugsEye catalog finding technology.
According to the statement, the Achilles Marketplace is also in "advanced" talks with other "major" utility companies. Such support from large players in the U.K. utilities industry will give the Achilles Marketplace a foothold over competing B2B marketplaces, the companies assert.
