STOCKHOLM (05/10/2000) - Database vendor Oracle Corp. and Swedish telecommunications operator Telia AB yesterday unveiled Halebop, an operator-independent portal aimed at Swedish users of the WAP (wireless application protocol) technology for accessing the Internet via mobile devices.
In addition to WAP, the portal also offers services based on SMS (short message service), a text-based messaging system popular with users of GSM (global system for mobile communications) mobile phones, according to a company statement.
Similar portals are planned for other markets, including Finland, Italy, Great Britain, Germany and the U.S. Halebop is now also the official name of the joint venture Oracle and Telia agreed to form in February, the statement said.
