STOCKHOLM (05/12/2000) - Internet search and portal site provider AltaVista Co. yesterday announced the appointment of Pierre Paperon as president of AltaVista Europe.
Paperon, who will report directly to AltaVista's President and Chief Executive Officer Rod Shrock, will oversee the company's planned expansion of its country-specific site network in Europe, the company said in a statement.
By the end of the year, AltaVista plans to launch 15 new country-specific sites in Europe, in addition to the six sites it already operates aimed at users in France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden and the U.K.
Paperon most recently has served as managing director of AltaVista France.
Prior to joining the Internet company, Paperon was the founder and CEO of consulting company Operandi SA. In addition to 14 years of business experience, he also served four years in the French navy as a nuclear submarine officer, according to the statement.
AltaVista Europe, with headquarters in Berkshire, the U.K., was established in October last year and employs more than 90 people.
AltaVista is majority-owned by Internet holding company CMGI Inc. Plans to take AltaVista public have been delayed by the recent downturn in Internet stock.
