Brief: IBM Snags Two $1.5 Billion Deals

BOSTON (05/17/2000) - IBM Corp.'s professional services unit has won a pair of 10-year outsourcing deals that are each valued at about $1.5 billion.

Aventis SA, a pharmaceutical and life sciences company based in France, yesterday announced that it signed on IBM Global Services to manage its computer centers, servers, help desks, e-mail systems and Internet operations.

Under the agreement with Aventis, IBM Global Services is scheduled to provide the various outsourcing services under local contracts that are scheduled to begin taking effect this year at Aventis' business units in the U.S., France, Germany, Japan and the U.K.

In a separate announcement, IBM Global Services was awarded another 10-year deal to run back-office functions and provide Web hosting and infrastructure services to The New Power Co., a start-up energy provider that was launched yesterday by Houston-based Enron Corp. The start-up plans to sell energy to residential and small-business customers in deregulated markets throughout the U.S.
