ROME (05/24/2000) - Telecom Italia SpA and IBM Italy SpA have signed an agreement for the joint development of applications, electronic-business services, and the creation of an Italian network of Internet Data Centers, the companies announced today.
The Italian incumbent telecom carrier and IBM Corp.'s Italian subsidiary will create 10 centers over the next five years. The first two will open in Milan and Rome by the end of this year, the companies said in a written statement.
The centers will provide e-commerce and distance learning services to Italy's small and medium-sized businesses, the statement said.
Telecom Italia will provide broadband connectivity for the project through its national fiber-optic infrastructure, while IBM will be responsible for integrating software and hardware and for managing the centers. The services operating out of the centers will be available to other Internet Service Providers and Application Service Providers, the statement said.
