Alcatel Wins US$175M IP Network Project in LatAm

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. (03/16/2000) - Alcatel SA has been chosen to expand the IP (Internet Protocol) networks of Convergence Communications Inc. in six Latin American countries over the next three years in a project worth US$175 million, the companies announced today.

The expansions will add bandwidth for both voice and data traffic in networks serving 33,000 customers in México, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Panama and Venezuela. Convergence, an IP-based carrier, plans to make its networks available for e-commerce, Web hosting, high-speed Internet access and Net telephony.

This is the first IP network project that Alcatel will be in charge of on a region-wide level in Latin America, the companies said.
