Web Technologies in Spotlight

SAN MATEO (04/03/2000) - INTERNET WORLD IN Los Angeles this week will play host to the premiere of several technologies aimed at improving the Web experience for both end-users and developers.

A beta version of the Netscape 6 browser will be unveiled by Steve Case, America Online Inc. chairman and CEO, during his keynote address Tuesday, according to company officials.

Netscape 6 will have a foundation in Gecko, Netscape's standard-based browser technology. Netscape 6 will replace the Netscape Navigator 4.x browser line.

Tribal Voice will demonstrate its PowWow 4 IM (instant messaging) client, which last year was embroiled in IM interoperability battles with AOL, after AOL tried to prevent other IM services from connecting to its product.

However, Tribal Voice claims that PowWow 4 is fully compliant with AOL Instant Messenger, Microsoft Messenger Service, and Yahoo Messenger and has a mini-browser for fast access to online information.

Methods used to construct, manage, and maintain Web pages are expected to get a boost from companies such as ZY.com, which will release its new ZY modules this week. The modules are user-configurable items of content that can be reconfigured, changed, and placed on any Web page by inserting a single line of HTML.

"Users don't have to go through the hassle of republishing their entire Web pages every time they want to change a headline, button, or photograph, " said Steve Congrave, director of business development at ZY.com. People using the ZY module services must have a ZY account to access the modules.

Content delivery will continue to play a large role at Internet World as faster Web site performance becomes the rallying cry of e-commerce companies around the world.

Akamai Technologies will unveil improvements to FreeFlow Streaming -- its streaming media content-delivery solution -- and add to its portfolio a streaming media application targeted at enterprises.
