Survey: System Outages Worry Execs

FRAMINGHAM (04/04/2000) - System outages and capacity issues rank as the chief concerns among online brokerage executives, according to a newly released survey by Deloitte & Touche LLP.

The New York-based accounting and consulting firm polled 60 online trading executives and found their chief business concerns are outages and an inability to handle the swelling ranks of online traders.

The survey, which was conducted between November 1999 and January 2000, found that 60 percent of executives at full-service brokerages and 38 percent of managers at discount firms listed "system outages and mistakes/handling growing transaction volume" among their greatest fears.

The survey also predicted that discount brokerages will begin to partner with larger institutions over the next year.

"In the upcoming year, we expect that many online discounters will align themselves with investment or commercial banks to expand their product offerings to include services such as equity, underwriting, investment management, traditional lending and internal research capabilities," the report said.
