In what it described as a "major strategic initiative", IBM has launched a range of personal computing devices to form part of the technology giant's new NetVista brand.
The new products, designed under IBM's Edge of Network (EoN) strategy, include "next-stage" PCs, internet access devices and thin-client technologies.
IBM's EoN strategy is designed to deliver products that are optimised for personal use in everyday circumstances -- increasingly a reality with the introduction of thin and wireless technologies such as Bluetooth, said IBM's EoN marketing vice president, David McAughtry.
He said the new products would see the "rebirth and migration of the PC into a new environment". The PC was becoming nothing more than the final delivery point of a network solution, he said.
The NetVista range include matt-black designs, high-resolution flat-panel screens, 256-bit encryption and wireless LAN capabilities. The NetVista All-in-One is a home or office device with a 75 per cent smaller footprint than the average PC, and includes CD/DVD, two PCI slots, and seven USB ports, McAughtry said.
IBM's NetVista range also includes a "legacy-free" device, complete with a built-in personal organiser cradle; an internet appliance, offering push-button high-speed net access; and a new Netfinity web caching appliance.
The NetVista products will be available through IBM business partners from June, the company said.
