Yahoo Says Don't Cry For Me, Argentina

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. (03/13/2000) - No need to cry for Yahoo Inc. anymore, Argentina.

Yahoo announced today the launch of its Web guide for this South American country, which includes a directory of Web sites and a selection of news and information relevant to Argentineans, free e-mail, chat service, instant messaging, calendar and address book, the company announced. The site's content and user interface are in Spanish.

With this Argentina site, Yahoo now has 22 different Web sites tailored for specific countries and audiences, including one for Spanish-speakers in general, another for Mexicans and another for Brazilians.

Argentina was Latin America's third-largest Internet market in 1999, both in terms of Internet users with 800,000 and in terms of business-to-consumer online sales with US$15 million, according to Jupiter Communications Inc. in New York. Argentina is expected to have 7 million Internet users and $1.1 billion in business-to-consumer online sales by 2005, according to Jupiter.

Along with the launching of this site, Yahoo has also opened an office in Buenos Aires, a spokeswoman said today.
