LOS ANGELES (04/05/2000) - Realizing that e-commerce needs a boost in the shipping department, GoShip.com has taken aim at consolidating and customizing carrier service for e-commerce vendors.
Launching its services here at Spring Internet World 2000 yesterday, GoShip.com will act as a service provider and manage a carrier service and ship rate database, as well as shipping cost calculations, for online vendors.
"The early days of high margins and doing anything to keep the customer coming back are now turning into serving the customer fairly, but also managing the business and keeping it going," said Neal Anstadt, chief executive officer of GoShip.com.
GoShip lets e-businesses choose the carriers they wish to offer on their site as well as offer various rates and shipping approaches based on the customer -- giving wholesale customers different rates than retail customers, for example.
An optional service plan offers "line-item" prioritized shipping choices, so a customer can choose to send some parts of an order overnight while other products follow at standard delivery rate.
"We want to benefit the vendors and benefit the customers," Anstadt said.
"Customers want choice; vendors are asking, 'How do we do all this and run our business?' We give a company the flexibility to give (different shipping options) to any part of the market at any time (a business) needs to."
Although GoShip.com provides the services, online businesses retain control of some shipping aspects, such as adding or deleting carriers, Anstadt added.
GoShip's services would be directly integrated with the e-commerce site's "check-out" page to display the GoShip shipping template, and GoShip would charge companies a transaction fee "likely less than US$1" when the transaction is fully completed, Anstadt said.
Anstadt said GoShip.com is now focusing on the small package market, but will look at adding large-package delivery services for products such as furniture in the future.
GoShip.com services are distributed through e-commerce service providers, and the company is integrating its solutions with e-commerce software products, such as Intershop's IS4 ePages.
