Nokia to Build Trial 3G Network in Hong Kong

PARIS (04/05/2000) - Hong Kong telecommunications operator New World Telecom will later this month begin testing a third-generation (3G) mobile communication system from Finnish equipment manufacturer Nokia Networks, a division of Nokia Corp.

The companies will conduct a field trial of a system based on Nokia's Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) technology, the companies said in a statement today. The move would allow New World to evaluate the technology in a real operating environment and to demonstrate mobile Internet services and applications, Nokia said.

The prototype network equipment, software and mobile terminals will be used to test transmission speed, hand-overs between base stations and power control, as well as real service applications, according to the statement.

Nokia already has experimental WCDMA field systems installed in China, Finland and Japan.

New World Mobility, in Hong Kong, can be found on the Web at Nokia, in Espoo, Finland, is at +358-9-5113-8193, or on the Web at
