STOCKHOLM (04/17/2000) - L.M. Ericsson Telephone Co. today announced that it has been awarded a contract by the Telecommunications Company of Iran (TCI) to supply equipment for the expansion of a nationwide GSM (global system for mobile communications) wireless network.
Under the terms of the agreement, Ericsson will help TCI expand the digital mobile phone network to support 1 million subscribers, up from its current capacity of 600,000, the Stockholm-based telecommunications equipment vendor said in a statement.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Expanding the 900MHz GSM network's capacity in the capital city of Teheran will be an immediate priority, Ericsson said.
Deliveries of the turnkey network system, which will include radio base stations, switching and other equipment as well as network planning services, will start by year's end, Ericsson said.
This was the first order TCI has placed for mobile phone network equipment with Ericsson, although the two companies are no strangers. Ericsson said it has previously delivered fixed-line telecommunications equipment to the Iranian operator.
