Startup Offers Universal SAN Management

FRAMINGHAM (04/19/2000) - Storage Network Technologies announced new software and hardware that allow management of heterogeneous server and storage area networks (SANs).

SAN Volume Manager is an appliance that allows storage administrators to manage storage on multiple server and operating system environments. It lets admins monitor physical volume definitions and virtual storage allocations for all servers and storage connected to a Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop or switch-fabric network.

From a single management console, the storage admin can manage remote mirroring or snapshot backups, as well as data stored in shared file systems or clusters.

The appliance connects to the SAN via a separate connection to avoid contention with data traffic. It works in SANs running Windows NT, Linux or Unix. Each server, RAID tape, library or disk array contains a software driver that collects statistics, and sends them to the appliance and then to the management console.

With SAN Volume Manager, storage partitions or zones, fail-over or mirroring can be configured. Volumes can be accessed by more than one host computer, allowing file sharing. Potential bottlenecks can be observed and storage reconfigured to eliminate them.

Each appliance has two Fibre Channel ports that support switch fabric or arbitrated loop configurations and one 10/100M bit/sec Ethernet connector for linking the device to the local network.

The appliance and software are available now. Pricing is not
