SAN FRANCISCO (04/24/2000) - Eyeing a blossoming market for TFT (thin-film transistor) flat-panel monitors, IBM Corp. today announced that it has expanded its flat-panel monitor product line, in addition to cutting prices on other monitors.
IBM said it is releasing TFT flat-panel monitors in low, medium and high price categories.
"The flat-panel monitor market is growing at a rate of 40 percent this year and next year," Doug Jamison, IBM visual products brand manager, said late last week in a telephone interview. "So, as a consequence, we are going to broaden our presence in that market."
Although the TV-like CRT (cathode ray tube) monitors still dominate, accounting for 95 percent of today's monitor market, flat-panel sales are growing four times as fast as those of CRT monitors, Jamison said. "CRT monitors are not going away, but flat panels are an emerging market," he added.
IBM's low-cost T54A, 15-inch, TFT Flat Panel Monitor is available today in white or black at an estimated reseller price of US$979. The T54A is designed for displaying general business applications including business graphics, word processing and basic spreadsheets. It has a tilt stand for angling the monitor.
The high-end T74A and T86A TFT Flat Panel Monitors are designed for specialized, complex applications such as desktop publishing, and medical and scientific imaging.
The 17-inch, T74A monitor allows wide viewing. The monitor is presently available in black and will be available in white May 23 at a reseller price of $2,529.
The T86A, 18-inch TFT flat-panel monitor is designed for advanced users and can be rotated. With its frame reduced by 40 percent, it can be used by customers for dual-monitor applications. It is available now in white and black at a cost of $3,199.
The monitors can be wall-mounted, using IBM's Radial Arm, available Tuesday, for $169.
IBM has also reduced prices on many of its existing TFT and CRT monitors.
Prices on IBM's 17-inch CRT monitors now range from $249 to $399; 19-inch CRT monitors cost between $499 and $579; 15-inch flat-panel monitors start from $979, and 18-inch flat-panel monitors cost as low as $3,199.
