WASHINGTON (04/24/2000) - Qualcomm Inc. has invested US$144 million in free ISP (Internet service provider) NetZero Inc., which in turn will begin distributing Qualcomm's Eudora e-mail as its preferred client software, the companies said in a release today.
The e-mail software will be included on NetZero CDs and will be part of the standard install program for NetZero's client access software. NetZero, with more than 3 million registered users, is one of the largest providers of free Internet access and e-mail.
The Eudora software is free of charge when used in sponsor mode, which displays advertisements in a small window on the user's monitor. Qualcomm released Eudora 4.3 in February.
Qualcomm is investing in NetZero in order to combine its core wireless and Internet products with wireless Internet technologies developed by NetZero, the release said. NetZero said the arrangement was compatible with its goal to provide customers with universal Internet access across numerous platforms, including dial-up, high-speed wireless, broadband and cellular.
The investment gives Qualcomm approximately 10 percent of NetZero's outstanding common stock.
