HELSINKI (03/01/2000) - Finnish mobile phone operator Sonera Corp. says it has uncovered a global demand for its Zed mobile information services.
Mobile phone operators including Powertel (U.S.), Turkcell (Turkey), Hutchison Telecom (Germany), Smart Communications (Philippines) and KPN Mobile and Libertel (Netherlands) will provide their customers with Sonera's Zed mobile communication services, the Finnish company said in a statement.
Between them, the mobile phone operators have about 13.5 million customers.
The Zed range includes SMS (short message service) and WAP (wireless application protocol) services provided by Sonera's business partners.
Zed chairman Juha Varelius says the success comes as no surprise.
"Zed is based on technology that already exists and is found to be good.
Finland being the leading nation in mobile communication, Zed has been tested in the toughest test laboratory in the world," said Varelius.
In Finland, 600,000 of Sonera's 2.1 million mobile customers use the Zed services.
Varelius says that wireless communication offers new possibilities for doing and generating business. Wireless advertising and commerce are already here, and there will be new possibilities for sponsorships and product advertising.
Sonera has also formed partnerships with 24/7 Europe and Icon Medialab to cooperate on Zed services.
