C&W to Build $158M Web Hosting Center in U.K.

LONDON (03/02/2000) - Cable & Wireless Communications PLC is investing over 100 million pounds (US$158 million) in creating what it says will be one of the largest Web hosting centers in Europe, the company announced today.

When it is finished, the 130,000 square foot center, to be located in Swindon, west of London, will have the capacity to host every Web site currently operating in the U.K., the company said in a statement. The site will also be connected to the company's international IP (Internet Protocol) network infrastructure.

The center will host sites from Europe and beyond, and will be protected by security methods including electronic and biometric access control for the on-site security staff and engineers, as well as having an on-site power station capable of running the center for one week without refueling.

The center is the latest part of the company's plan to build 20 Web hosting centers by 2002. There are already three Cable & Wireless centers in Japan, and one in Reston, Virginia. The company also purchased 8 European ISPs (Internet service providers) in January, adding an additional 75,000 feet of Web hosting space.
