STOCKHOLM (03/03/2000) - L.M. Ericsson Telephone Co. today announced the signing of a letter of intent for a major expansion and upgrade of Saudi Telecommunications Co.'s (STC) mobile phone network in Saudi Arabia.

Under the terms of an agreement valued at more than US$300 million, Ericsson will supply network equipment to allow STC to add 1 million new subscribers to its existing GSM (global system for mobile communications) network, the Stockholm-based mobile phone and network equipment supplier said in a statement.

Once the expansion and upgrade are completed, STC will also be able to roll out new advanced services, including prepaid subscriptions and mobile Internet applications based on WAP (wireless application protocol), Ericsson said.

The expansion will bring the STC network's total capacity to more than 2 million subscribers, Ericsson said.

Ericsson said it will also employ and train some 150 Saudi technicians in installation and maintenance skills.
