LONDON (03/03/2000) - Amid much speculation over the completion of its planned merger with US West Inc., the U.S. telecommunications company, Qwest Communications International Inc. today named the management team that will head the new company created by the finalized merger.
The new executive team, composed of executives from both companies, will begin work immediately on closing the merger by mid-year, Qwest said in a statement.
It has been widely reported that German telecommunications company Deutsche Telekom AG is trying to either stop the merger between US West and Qwest or at least change the terms of the deal, which has already been approved by the boards of both companies. [See "Deutsche Telekom Offers to Buy Qwest, Say Reports," March 3.]It is believed that Deutsche Telekom is in negotiations with Qwest to take over the company and is not interested in also acquiring US West at its current value. Officials at Deutsche Telekom declined to comment on any rumored takeover of Qwest, or for that matter, of Global Crossing Ltd., another company with which the German telecommunications firm is rumored to be in acquisition talks.
