Australians still ecommerce shy: ABS

Less than 4 per cent of Australians made a purchase via the internet last year, says the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) report.

What's more, according to the report, 36 per cent of these purchasers bought only one item in the entire year.

The report, which the ABS released this week, estimated 25 per cent of Australian households had internet access in November 1999. It estimated 803,000 -- or 6 per cent -- of all Australian adults used the internet to purchase or order goods or services for private use in the 12 months leading up to November 1999.

Thus, according to the figures in the survey, only 24 per cent of Australian adults with private internet access were willing to carry out any sort of financial transaction via the Web during the 12 months to November 1999.

The proportion of Australian households with PCs increased from 47 to 50 per cent of Australian households.

The ABS said the report followed a survey of 3200 randomly selected Australian adults from private households.
