FRAMINGHAM (01/31/2000) - Online retail giant Amazon.com Inc., dogged by losses despite sales growth, is eliminating 150, or about 2 percent, of its 7,500 positions.
The cuts will occur across the company and were a result of an organization review, said Bill Curry, a spokesman for the Seattle-based retailer. "We always assess the skills and mission with the people we have," he said.
For the third quarter of 1999, Amazon.com posted $356 million in sales, but lost $79 million. The company announced the layoffs Thursday. Its fourth-quarter earnings are due Wednesday.
