TOKYO (03/09/2000) - Two days ahead of a widely rumored announcement by Microsoft Corp. that it is getting into the computer game console market, the software giant has registered a domain name corresponding to that of the reported new console.
Microsoft chairman Bill Gates is scheduled to address the Game Developers Conference in San Jose, California, on Friday and, according to numerous reports, he will use his address to unveil a new console called the Xbox.
Yesterday the company registered the xbox.com domain name. Registration of Internet domain names can be an indication of a company's future plans but is sometimes nothing more than an attempt to prevent others from registering the name.
Microsoft Corp., in Redmond, Washington, is online at http://www.microsoft.com/.
