Microsoft makes expedient getaway

Microsoft Australia has no connection to Expedia.com, a US online travel agency run by Microsoft in the US, which has been hit with credit card fraud.

Local Microsoft executives said the company was committed to its Australian travel agency Getaway, which it runs in partnership with ninemsn. While ninemsn had some dealings with Expedia.com, the companies maintain that these dealings were not affected by the fraud.

The fraud, involving shonky credit card transactions, cost Expedia.com up to $US6 million ($A9.8 million). The scam saw criminals using phoney credit card details to purchase travel online.

Expedia.com said it had "booked in" additional "sales costs" into its quarterly budget of up to $US6 million. The travel agency said new (undisclosed) anti-fraud measures have been taken, which it claimed were already proving effective.
