LONDON (03/13/2000) - Global Crossing Ltd. will extend its high-capacity Pan European Crossing (PEC) network into Spain and Scandinavia, connecting eight more cities to its worldwide network, the company announced today.
Global Crossing, which builds and operates a global IP (Internet Protocol)- based fiber optic network, will expand its services to five Spanish cities, including Madrid and Barcelona, and to three Scandinavian cities, including Oslo and Stockholm, the company said in a statement.
All of the cities will be added to the network by 2001, bringing the company's total European investment in the network to US$3 billion. When completed, the PEC network will cover more than 23,000 kilometers, linking 41 major cities in Europe to the rest of the world over the company's network, Global Crossing said.
The company also announced that Lucent Technologies Inc. will provide its optical networking systems in Spain and Scandinavia.
Global Crossing has existing terrestrial networks in North America and Japan, as well as underwater cables connecting Asia and Europe with North America.
