AOL Cuts Licensing Deal with Lernout & Hauspie

SAN FRANCISCO (03/13/2000) - Lernout & Hauspie Speech Products Inc. (L&H) announced an agreement today to license its Intelligent Content Management (ICM) tools to America Online Inc.

In a statement, L&H said the tools include software for checking spelling and grammar, and should help AOL members by providing them with new ways to organize and search through documents downloaded from the Internet.

Financial terms of the deal were not announced. The companies also did not say how and when AOL might integrate the software with its online services. Neither company could be reached immediately to comment.

L&H's ICM tools include IntelliScope Language Recognizer, which can identify more than 40 languages and codes, including HTML (hypertext markup language) and XML (extended markup language) formats; IntelliScope Search Enhancer, an information retrieval tool designed to bring added depth to searches; and CorrectEnglish, a tool that corrects errors commonly made by speakers of other languages when they write in English.

L&H is best-known for its speech-recognition software.
