Lucent buys DeltaKabel, teams with Canadian telco

Lucent Technologies this week announced plans to buy Dutch cable modem maker DeltaKabel TeleCom CV and also said it will boost US-Canada telecommunications links through a deal with a division of Gateway Telecom Canada.

With an eye toward expanding in Europe, Lucent has entered a definitive agreement to buy privately held DeltaKabel for an undisclosed sum, according to a statement from Lucent. DeltaKabel makes telephony-enabled cable modems that connect to standard telephones and computers and also makes cable modem termination systems for cable operators' networks, which the cable modems can connect to via a standard coaxial cable, the statement said.

DeltaKabel's products will be used to complement Lucent's CableConnect Solutions, Lucent's products and services aimed at cable operators who want to provide their customers with telephony and high-speed data services over existing cable networks delivering video services, according to Lucent.

DeltaKabel's 60 employees will remain at their current locations but be considered part of Lucent's Cable Solutions Group within Lucent's Service Provider Networks business, the statement said. DeltaKabel was founded in 1973 and has headquarters in Gouda and a sales office in Singapore, Lucent said. The acquisition is subject to the usual regulatory approvals, but will probably be completed during the quarter ending June 30 of this year, the company said.

On the Canadian front, Lucent this week said it had signed a $US30 million ($A48.68 million) agreement with Gateway Networks to provide a range of equipment to boost Gateway Networks' suite of wholesale services to ISPs and telecommunications carriers. Lucent will provide Gateway Networks with MAX TNT wide area network switches, Stinger Digital Subscriber Line Access Concentrators (DSLAM), Internet Call Diversion and NavisAccess multiservice access management software, according to Lucent. Gateway Networks will use the technology to offer internet wholesaling and long-distance services in 21 North American cities, Lucent said.
