Equant has launched its integrated voice and data over IP service, with customers including Coca-Cola Amatil signed up to use what it claims is a "first of a kind" service.
"We are the first and only operator to deliver integrated voice and data over IP," said Andrew Bond-Webster, president, Asia-Pacific, Equant Network Services.
"Others are only providing voice over IP . . . and this might be over a public internet connection (where) quality of service is not guaranteed. We use our own VPN," he said.
Launched as part of Equant's existing integrated services portfolio, the service is currently available in 50 countries including Australia. Bond-Webster said the only limitations for the service are regulatory and licensing issues.
Built around Cisco Systems technology, the service offers customers the ability to deliver voice and data applications over a single network, cutting costs and simplifying network management, Bond-Webster said.
The service can currently offer voice, data, video streaming, fax and file transfer services, and will include videoconferencing, offline applications and data conferencing in the future. Bond-Webster said the future applications will be driven by customer demand.
Customers of Equant's existing integrated voice and data over frame relay service launched in 1998 are expected to migrate to the new service.
"Over time we expect to have significantly more IP-based customers than frame relay," Bond-Webster said, adding that both multinational and SME customers would benefit from the service.
