BOSTON (03/16/2000) - IBM Corp. today announced seven new models of its ThinkPad i series notebook computers aimed at individuals and small business users.
The ThinkPad i Series 1400 models are designed to offer customizable easy launch buttons and a media center with instant audio. In addition, some models feature ThinkLight technology, which illuminates the keyboard and is helpful for working in low-light situations, IBM said in a written statement today.
The new models are available with either Intel Corp. Celeron or Pentium III 500MHz processors. They also feature displays of up to 15 inches, hard drives of up to 12G bytes, integrated 56K bits per second (bps) modems and CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drives.
Three ThinkPad i Series 1500 notebooks have Microsoft Corp.'s Office 2000 Small Business Edition preloaded, in addition to the same hardware features available on the ThinkPad i Series 1400 models.
IBM today also outlined a program designed to provide small businesses with services similar to those offered to the company's large corporate customers.
The program will extend IBM's Owner Privileges program beyond its membership of 1 million individual members to include small business customers and individuals, according to the statement, which cites market researcher Aberdeen Group Inc. as saying that small business customers are currently the most populous business segment in the U.S. The Owner Privileges program includes preferred call handling to tech support, a customized online support profile, and monthly electronic newsletters.
The Owner Privileges program will also cover all Personal Systems Group (PSG) products purchased via the IBM Web site, including Intellistations, commercial desktops, ThinkPads, Aptivas, Netfinity servers, WorkPad PC companions and third party options in addition to subscriptions to WebConnections, IBM said.
Pricing for the 1400 i Series models ranges from US$1,499 for the 1422, which features a 500MHz Celeron processor, a 13-inch HPA (High-Performance Addressing) screen, 32M bytes of RAM, a 6G-byte hard drive and a 24X-10X CD-ROM to $2,699 for the 1492, which boasts a 500MHz Pentium III processor, a 15-inch TFT (thin film transistor) screen, 64M bytes of RAM, a 12G-byte hard drive and a 6X-1X DVD-ROM.
