FRAMINGHAM (03/16/2000) - EGain Communications Corp., a Sunnyvale, Calif., vendor of customer service software for use in call centers, today said it's buying Inference Corp. in Novato, Calif., in a stock deal worth about $70 million at current prices.
Inference, which had sales of $22.9 million in its fiscal year ended in January, makes Web-based software that lets online retailers provide personalized sales and support to their customers. Meanwhile, eGain's software lets companies deal with customers via e-mail, Internet chat and other channels. In the first half of its fiscal year through December, eGain reported sales of $3.8 million.
The combined company will have about 500 employees and 450 corporate users.
Common customers include America Online Inc., Thomson Consumer Electronics, 3Com Corp. and the Italian Post Office.
Other companies that have bought eGain's software include The Home Depot Inc., Walgreen Co. and GTE Corp.
