Microsoft, Barnes & Noble to Deliver eBooks

Microsoft Corp. will announce a partnership tomorrow with book retailer Barnes & Noble Inc. that will lead to an "explosion" of interest in electronic books, Bill Gates, Microsoft Corp.'s chairman and chief executive officer, said at the Consumer Electronics Show here tonight.

Gates made the remark during a demonstration of the Pocket PC, the next version of Microsoft's next-generation Palm-size PC platform, due out later this year.

The Pocket PC will include Microsoft's eReader software, which includes Clear Type, a technology designed to improve on-screen text and encourage people to read books from handheld computers, Gates said.

Gates didn't give any other details about the partnership. However, the company is scheduled to hold a press conference here tomorrow morning at 7:30 a.m. PST to provide an update on its efforts with eBooks.
