Anglican Homes Builds Million Dollar IP Communications Network With Nortel and Converged Solutions

Major network overhaul expected to save costs, simplify management, and improve services

SYDNEY (May 30, 2006) – Anglican Homes, one of Western Australia’s largest aged care providers, is building a converged IP communications network using Nortel technology to reduce costs, simplify management and improve services to its staff and customers.

The new network, covering 19 Anglican Homes sites, will be configured and implemented by Nortel nPower channel partner Converged Networks, and will replace Anglican Homes’ existing piecemeal network with a single consolidated network infrastructure. The total cost is expected to reach $1 million once all 19 sites have been rolled out.

“Our goal from the start was to upgrade the separate voice and data networks, which consisted of a variety of vendors’ equipment, and to implement a common framework for all voice, data, and multimedia services to take advantage of converging technologies as industry standards become established,” said Peter Mildenhall, IT manager, Anglican Homes.

“A major focus was integrating our existing systems such as Nurse Call, Paging and Fire Alarms, and then delivering new services such as text messaging and alerts directly to the Voice over IP (VoIP) handsets connected to the wireless LAN,” said Mildenhall. “This allows staff to carry a single device for all communications regardless of which site they’re on.”

Each site is connected to head office over a high-speed DSL link enabling centralised end-to-end domain and network management. The solution incorporates a high-density Gigabit network with the ability to deliver Power over Ethernet (PoE) to every desktop.

Mildenhall said Converged Networks and Nortel presented the best package in terms of features, cost and performance, factoring in the requirement for high reliability and resiliency, simplified manageability, integration with existing systems, local maintenance and support, investment protection and total cost of ownership.

Converged Networks solution specialist Luke Zappara said that building a new network from the ground up is always a challenge, but particularly where new and legacy equipment has to integrate to deliver reliable converged services in a mission-critical environment from day one.

“One of the challenges we faced was how to deploy an essentially new network without having to re-cable every site. This was overcome by using the Nortel BCM’s support for a wide range of endpoints – such as digital, IP and WLAN telephones – allowing us to tailor the design to suit the environment.”

Nick Avakian, general manager, Enterprise Networks, Australia and New Zealand, Nortel, said: “We’re making it possible for customers like Anglican Homes to take advantage of new communication technologies without discarding their legacy equipment.

“Many companies see the benefits of moving to IP, but are held back by substantial investments in (largely incompatible) legacy equipment. We’re circumventing the problem with hybrid technology that allows our technology partners to build solutions that migrate their customers to IP at their own pace, and offer a better overall solution than they would get with an IP-only installation.”

The solution is a complete forklift upgrade of the entire voice and data network, and includes Nortel’s Business Communications Manager (BCM) for the voice and WAN routing, Nortel Ethernet Routing Switches for the data switching, Nortel 2300 series wireless LAN and Voice-over-WLAN (VoWLAN) handsets, and Nortel’s Enterprise Management Network software. Third-party cable and power management has also been provided, and the total solution is backed by a comprehensive support program and a 24/7 helpdesk from Converged Networks.
