3Com Corp. wants to end the service order waiting game for enterprise customers of converged voice/data service providers.
3Com last week announced that it will integrate service order management software from MetaSolv Software into its own service activation system for carriers. MetaSolv's Telecom Business Solution (TBS) software will be integrated into 3Com's CommWorks5020 netActive service management system.
The combined software package from the two companies will let new service providers deliver converged, data, IP telephony, wireless data and broadband access more quickly to customers from the time they order them.
With the integrated software packages, service providers "can take an order that would have taken two weeks to fulfill in the past, and turn that around in an hour," says Glenn Hellman, a vice president with 3Com's Carrier Networks division.
"The way orders get provisioned by most new carriers today is by fax or some sort of paper" sent from a customer service office to a network operations center, says Hellman. "An engineer then sits down with the paper, goes into a management application [such as CommWorks5020] and activates the service." The potential for human error in this process is eliminated when the ordering and service activation systems are automated, he adds.
By increasing delivery speed of services, Hellman says, competitive and incumbent local exchange carriers as well as interexchange carriers will also save costs from lost or mishandled business.
The combined CommWorks/TBS product from 3Com and Plano, Texas-based MetaSolv will be available to carriers at the end of August.
