British Telecommunications PLC, AT&T Wireless Services and Microsoft plan to jointly conceive, develop and deploy new wireless applications around the world, building on existing alliances between the three companies.
The new, high-powered global collaboration, announced today, will offer new wireless services through Advance, a partnership between London-based BT and AT&T Wireless in Washington, that's intended to enable customers to easily use cell phones anywhere in the world on next-generation IP-based wireless networks.
Microsoft said it will dedicate a development team to create mobile business and consumer applications that will take advantage of existing and future high-speed wireless data networks. The tripartite agreement adds AT&T Wireless to an existing arrangement between BT and Microsoft to develop wireless applications for corporate and consumer users.
The companies said they expected to begin trials of some of the services in our Spring, with commercial rollout to follow shortly thereafter.
