Intel to Build US$150M U.K. Server Farm

Intel Corp. will build an online service facility in the U.K. worth US$150 million, the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) announced yesterday.

The "server farm" is Intel's third such facility and the first one to be built outside of the U.S. The facility, to be located in the Thames Valley, outside of Reading, England, will provide Internet hosting services for all of Europe, SEEDA said in a statement.

Intel Online Services Inc., the Internet hosting and e-commerce services division of Intel, has a server farm in Santa Clara, California, and is building another one in Virginia which it expects to be up and running this quarter.

The U.K. facility, which is also expected to be completed this quarter, will have a staff of 170 and will hold 10,000 Internet servers, SEEDA said.
