Cisco Systems Inc. today rolled out a set of Catalyst LAN (local area network) switching and routing products targeted at midsize businesses and branch offices with 250 to 1000 employees.
"The requirements have gone up for the midmarket customer," said Richard Martin, product line manager for the desktop switching business unit at Cisco.
"They are becoming Internet-enabled businesses. They need scalable networks with (quality of service capabilities), increased security, and high availability."
The LAN products are intended to support business applications such as supply-chain management, business-to-business e-commerce, and customer relationship management.
New switches in the Catalyst LAN solution include:
-- The Catalyst 3548 XL, which is a stackable 10/100 Gigabit Ethernet switch that uses Cisco Switch Clustering technology to extend single IP address management to more than 750 ports. This simplifies network management and switch deployment, according to Cisco. It is available now, priced starting at US$4,995.
-- The Catalyst 4908G-L3, which is a backbone routing switch that provides network security, quality of service, and high performance and availability. It will be available in March, priced at $14,995.
-- The Catalyst 2948G-L3 is a fixed-configuration 10/100 routing switch for aggregating multiprotocol traffic from wiring closets or desktop switches.
Available now, the 2948G-L3 is priced starting at $9,995.
