SAN FRANCISCO (01/28/2000) - Internet service provider Usurf America Inc. said today it will deploy wireless Internet services in an alliance with the telecommunications company US West Inc.
In a service aimed at small to medium-sized businesses, Usurf will offer wireless high-speed, T1 access to the Internet with US West infrastructure, David Loflin, Usurf America's president said today in a telephone interview.
"The Usurf-US West alliance will allow us to offer wireless Internet service virtually anywhere in the country using US West's infrastructure," Loflin said.
Usurf America will market its Wireless Quick-Cell system, which includes a wireless modem attached to a computer or network, Loflin said. Usurf will use US West private line DS3 corporate backbone, frame relay services and radio towers. US West will also support Usurf customer networks with its managed security services.
Loflin declined to release details of the arrangement. A US West spokesman also rebuffed questions about specifics, saying the final contract has not been signed.
The wireless service will be deployed at about 110 sites across the country, Loflin said. Plans call for further expansion at a later date, he said. The installation of the service costs about US $350, Loflin said.
