Management Tools Take Stage

SAN MATEO (05/01/2000) - Network Management administrators seeking that elusive ingredient to tie their enterprise directly into the company's online business process should find plenty of e-commerce network performance and analysis options to choose from at the NetWorld+Interop trade show in Las Vegas next week.

NetScout Systems Inc. looks to make waves at the show with its four-product nGenius e-business performance management system. The new product line, featuring nGenius Performance Monitor, nGenius Traffic Monitor, nGenius Server, and nGenius Probe, offers real-time visibility and control of both the front-and back-office network, company officials said.

Pricing for the nGenius system is $24,995, excluding nGenius Probe, which is priced separately at $19,995. Server and Traffic Monitor will be available next month, while Performance Monitor and Probe hit general release in August, NetScout officials said.

Companies becoming e-business players are proving less eager to use a "gold-rush mentality" and jump onto the Web without a solid e-business impact-monitoring plan in place, according to analyst Steve Foote, CEO of Enswers.com, in Boston.

"If you underestimate the potential market in this case, even if it is just casual viewers, your real customers will bail on you," Foote said. "You have to be able to see if it is a database problem or a traffic problem."

Determining the result of network faults on businesses, Micromuse's N+I release of Netcool/Impact Version 2.0 features enhanced performance upgrades and a new policy editor to provide data regarding action steps and the conditions of branches between network nodes, according to Andrew Ornsby, product manager for Netcool/Impact at Micromuse.

The product will be available in June, and pricing will be determined on the basis of individual components.

Meanwhile, Entuity Inc. is hoping to match its European success in the U.S. market with the unveiling of its Eye of the Storm 2.0 product at N+I.

The new LAN software detects network and business degradation by combining historical data, real-time status information, and details of a network's current configuration, said Entuity founder Jeremy Tracy.

Eye of the Storm is available now. Pricing starts at $20,000.
